1997年7月16日，菲律賓宿務市發生一起慘絕人寰的綁架謀殺案，當天鍾氏姊妹出門後便再也沒有返家過，雙雙失蹤音訊全無。搜索行動持續兩天後，村民通報可能是妹妹瑪莉喬伊的屍體在宿務某處懸崖下被發現，研判遭到虐待後推下山崖，而姊姊賈桂琳至今仍未被找到，生死未卜。
